Update / Status on Jewish Cemetery, Rockdale, Milam County, Texas
On Monday, I received an estimate of $435 from the Rockdale
Monument Company to repair the two gravemarkers in the cemetery.
I have not received an estimate from the monument company in
Cameron or Taylor.
Also, I have not received an estimate from the fence company in
Rockdale to replace the double gates (where the hearse drives in)
or the cost to realign the pedestrian gate from the street.
Currently the pedestrian gate does not meet to close and swings
in the wind.
But with the holidays, I expect a reply from the other companies
in early Jan. 2003.
Also, we have several tree stumps that need to be removed but I
think I can get some stump rot at the hardware store and that
will get rid of them in about a year.
I plan to submit the application for historic cemetery to the
Texas Historical Commission next week so it can be considered in
the first quarter of 2003. Once approved, we will then apply for
a Historical Marker and the cost there is approximately $1,000
for the marker and everyone will need to decide if you want it
mounted on a pole or on a piece of granite. I would suggest
placing the historical marker at the pedestrian / street-side
entrance, inside the gate.
Historical markers on a pole can be stolen very easily but if it
were mounted on a piece of granite, it would be harder to take
it. The families need to discuss this option. FYI the
historical marker on a pole in the Lilac community in Milam
County has been stolen twice in the last year. So they are
somewhat venerable to theft.
It should take approx. 3-months for the historic cemetery
application and then another 3-months for the historical marker
application.
We should probably begin now to decide how to raise the money to
undertake the repairs to the gravemarkers, fencing and to
purchase the historical marker. I have asked the Milam County
Genealogical Society to vote at their January 28th meeting to
make this one of their projects so we can use their non-profit
IRS to allow donations to be tax deductible and be exempt from
Texas sales tax, which is 8.25% in Milam County.
Please let me know what you think and hopefully we can now begin
making plans for a ceremony in the fall of 2003.
