Subject: Refugio Courthouse - 1914

The following appears in today's Corpus Christi Caller-Times as "this
day in Local History":

"1914: A fire caused by an overheated woodstove ignited in the
two-story wooden Refugio County courthouse. The building burned to the
ground. The current courthouse was built during Judge Eugene Low's
term, 1916-18."

"1835: The first Declaration of Texas Independence was signed at
Presidio La Bahia, a Spanish fort about one-half mile south of Goliad,
or about 65 miles north of Corpus Christi. The once-frontier fort is
listed as a National Historic Monument."
