Received a very old scrapbook put together in the early 1900's by a Kara Pounds of Sealy, TX. She wrote on the inside cover: Scrapbook of Kara Pounds, year 1889, items of Sealy early 1900's. She collected several articles called "With The Graduates" which give feature the commencement speeches & poems read at Sealy High school graduations from 1903-1906. Some of the names of the students who gave the speeches are: Miss Nata Phillips, Miss Sophie Currie (1905), C.D. Sanders, Miss Ellie Schenkel (1906), poem by Miss Addie Castleton (1906), oration by Mr. Chas. H. Sanders (1906), Miss Evaline Phillips (1906), class will by Miss Emma Willms (1906), Valedictory by Miss Ellie Schenkel (2nd article for her-1906), Valedictory by Willie Howard (1905, I believe), Valedictory by Ada Wessendorf (no date on article), an essay by Miss Lucy Phillips (1903) and an oration by Joe Wessendorf (1903).
There is an article called "SEALY SCHOOL, Past, Present & Future by Miss Mattie Willms and a poem/article about the town of Sealy and the local businesses there.
Here are a few of the obit's: Harry Oliver Sanders, 8/17/1898. He was 19 yr. & 15 days old, born in Bellville but lived in Sealy since 1889.He attended Hills business college in Waco & worked at W.A. Sanders and Menke & Howard Bros. (two local stores). No other family names given.
James Walter Jones, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. N.H. Jones, at age 23 years & 13 days. . No exact date in this article. Born in Colorado County, his family moved to Sealy when he was 3 yrs. old. His father was Eugene Jones. His brothers are listed on as C.C. and T.E. James was co-partner with D.E. Reaser, "the well known restuarant man". It says the funeral was one of the largest in Sealy history. Six of his most intimate young friends names are listed as: Robert Stone, Guy Morris, Marion & Richard Ward, Geo. Merkel & Fred Allen acted as pall bearers.
The relatives who were present were: T. E. Jones & wife of Brenham, Claude Mossell & John Lane of San Antonio, Mrs. H.D. Carnegie of Eagle lake, Ed Smith & wife of Houston & messrs. Will and John Connor of Wallis.
John F. McCarthy who was hit by a bolt of lightning. This article has crumbled away, but there is still some info. that can be gathered.
Miss Tonie Hackbarth, born 5/31/1881. The death date is June 19th (no year on this article). Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. F.W. Hackbarth, pioneer & prominent citizens of Sealy.
Miss Emilie Preibisch, died 7/3 (no year), age 64 yrs and 2 months & 13 days old. Her husband died 6 yrs. earlier (no name given).
Mrs. C. Menke at Bellville, aged 70 yrs, 4 months & 18 days. Died on June 4 (no yr.given) buried at Oak KNoll cemetery.
Mr. Joseph Paw, adopted son of Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Hirsch, died March 23 (no yr.).Died at age 16 yrs., 1 mo. & 12 days. Buried at the Catholic Church cemetery in Sealy. His nearest living relative was Mrs. Chas. Elof of Sealy and a brother, Charles of El Campo.
The weddings announcements are: Ms. Lydia Willms & M.F. Trenk (a long article about this wedding).
Miss Mattie Campbell & Robert Stone (married at the bride's brothers house - J. D. Campbell, Esq.) The bride was one of the principals at Brenham Public School, daughter of Judge Campbell of Chappell Hill.
Miss Harriett Houston to Mr. George H. Smith on June 21st (no year). The brides father was an employy of the Santa Fe railroad at Sealy and Bellville Yards. Other info. given about the ceremony.
Miss Lucy Nobles Dupree & Mr. Nathan Perry Ward, June 28 (no year). It says the brides mother died on June 23 and her father on June 25th!.
Miss Willie Flynn Meryer to Mr. R. M. Elliott. Married the bride's mothers house, Mrs. Thos. Watson on July 5th (no yr.)
Miss Kara Pounds was very careful to cut and paste these articles in the scrapbook, but she didn't add the year that the article was printed. All of the obits are together and the wedding announcements are all on one page. There are a few articles about social events in Sealy. The pages are yellowed and dry and and the binding is has cracked. The cover has a cute victorian picture on it of a little girl holding two puppies.
Just thought someone may find this of interest. I think these old scrapbooks are a real treasure.
