I realize that when we do our genealogy research we find that names are
often spelled many different ways. My delimma is that in my research of
early Bastrop history I have a relative named James Hiram Gillespie. He is
first listed in the 1840 census. I have found many references for this
Gillespie but many times I find it spelled differently. I have found
mention of a Capt. J.H. Gillespie, Capt Galaspy, J. Gillispy, Hermann
Gillespie, etc. In fact, on the Bastrop County Courthouse lawn there is a
petrified wood monument with the simple inscription, "Capt J. Galaspy"
followed by two dates (I can't remember the exact dates) that does not
correspond with his birth, death or anything else that I'm aware of. None
of the Bastrop Censuses show any other J.H. Gillespie/Galaspy/Gillaspie so
it would seem logical that all these different spellings are one and the
same.
Therefore, I'd like the listers out there to keep their eyes open for this
name or any derivation. I'd really like to determine if all of these
references are for my James Hiram Gillespie or if there was one or more
other individuals with similar names.
Thanks in advance.
PS---Great new look Tammy!
