Subject: [TXBELL] FW: Save Texas Cemeteries 2002 Cemetery Symposium
Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 23:23:01 -0500

This was posted today on the Texas Cemeteries discussion list. It
sounds very interesting. I may make an attempt to attend this
symposium. (Bell County is not too far from Austin, so I may stop and
stay in Belton for the weekend.) Anyone else interested?

Subject: [TX-Cem] Save Texas Cemeteries 2002 Cemetery Symposium

The preservation of the thousands of historic cemeteries in Texas is a
major concern of many folks -- and of Save Texas Cemeteries, Inc. With
approximately 50,000 cemeteries and burial sites in Texas, time is not
on
the side of saving them!

Many cemeteries are in much worse shape now than they were in the 1900s;

it appears that taking responsibility is currently not in vogue. The
last
session of the Texas Legislature passed a very significant bill making
the Texas Funeral Service Commission responsible for registering
cemeteries. This is something new for the FSC, and they are just now
getting the program going.

Save Texas Cemeteries' mission is to promote the preservation of
historic
cemeteries and burial grounds throughout Texas by public education and
historic research in order to preserve this rich, multicultural
heritage,
and these efforts prompt an upcoming symposium in order to learn more
about state regulations for cemeteries, cemetery preservation, and
markers and signs.

The Save Texas Cemeteries 2002 Cemetery Symposium will be held on
Saturday, June 15, 2002 from 1 to 4 pm, in Room E1.010 of the State
Capitol Extension, Austin, Texas. The symposium is free and open to the
public.

Speakers will include Mr. Chet Robbins, Director of the Texas Funeral
Services Commission; Mr. Russell Reese, Director of Special Audits,
Texas
Banking Commission; and Gerron Hite, Director of the Cemetery Program,
Texas Historical Commission.

Also available at the symposium will be order blanks for the STC
cemetery
sign program <http://www.rootsweb.com/~txstc/merchandise/sign.html>;. The

necessity of proper cemetery identification, including telephone
numbers,
cannot be over stressed.
