TEMPLE - Ground-breaking ceremony for improvements to historic
Hillcrest Cemetery will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8. Improvements include a
new 1,400-square-foot office and resource center, new entrance, gates and
fence encompassing the entire perimeter. This is the first major
construction in the cemetery since the 1920s.
Hillcrest is formally known as Temple Cemetery Company, the city's
largest and oldest not-for-profit cemetery governed by a volunteer board of
trustees. Burials date to the early 1870s. It is the final resting place
for many persons significant to state and national history, including a
Texas lieutenant governor, the father of Texas Forestry and nationally
recognized experts in medicine.
In April, the board signed contracts with Phillip Snyder
Construction Co. and Fences by Farr, both of Temple. Estimated cost of the
improvements is about $250,000.
The community building, which will house new offices, restrooms and
record storage, will be located on the cemetery's northwest corner. Taking
up the largest part of the office will be a meeting area where families can
gather before and after services. Historical exhibits and family history
information will also be available in the new community room. A new
entrance will be located at the corner of North First Street and West Shell.
The cemetery is certified by IRS as a not-for-profit organization, and all
donations are tax-deductible.
Hillcrest Cemetery has five Texas Historical Commission markers and
is the final resting place for an estimated 12,000 to 18,000 people. The
cemetery is governed by a volunteer board elected by the general membership.
Donations, which are fully tax-deductible, may be sent to Hillcrest
Cemetery, P.O. Box 2333, Temple, Texas 76503.
