I was glad to see an article in the Austin paper this morning that the
State is going to start putting markers on graves in the cemeteries for
the State Hospitals. They have always used a plain marker with just a
number on them, because in past years so many families were embarrassed
to have a family member in the State Hospitals. They will be putting up
markers with the name, date of birth, and date of death. They are also
opening their records for the first time, so people can attempt to find
family members. They will do this across the state. Unfortunately, in
the 1930's there was a fire at the hospital here in Austin and past
records were lost. They are attempting to identify people buried there,
but will not necessarily be able to identify individual graves because of
the fire. This movement was spurred by the interest in genealogy.
