The genealogy sites are not the only targets. Yesterday I received an
e-mail from Juno saying my account was being suspended because the credit
card company refused authorization, and gave a web link to update my
information. Fortunately for me that link didn't work, so I went to my
Juno account page and re-entered my information. I assumed when I got my
new card recently Juno had failed to use the new expiration date. Then I
got on-line to my credit card company, and it showed payment to Juno on
July 17, the last due date. This morning I received an e-mail from Juno
warning that the mail had been sent to many Juno subscribers beginning
Friday, August 1, and the link given in the message was fraudulent. I
guess I was saved by the fact I didn't receive mine until Monday, and the
web site had been shut down.

Last night I received another message from , with the
subject "Your Account", saying my e-mail address was being canceled
shortly, with details in the attachment. In spite of hearing on TV over
the weekend about the new deadly worm with "Your Account" in the subject
line, after receiving the first e-mail I was so upset I started to open
the attachment, and noticed it ended in .zip and knew someone had sent me
the new deadly virus. After deleting the message I checked the Symantec
web site and they said their latest update would catch the new virus, and
I check for updates every day without waiting for live updates.

In a similar vein, I recently received an e-mail purported to be from
PayPal saying they were updating their information, and not only wanted
my credit card number, but my pin number, Social Security number, and
several other things. Since I have never used PayPal I recognized it
immediately for the scam it was.

BE CAREFUL!!! These messages look really authentic.

Frances
