You might also note that in 1880 Alfred Short was in Hays County (south of Austin) living with wife Sarah b. ca 1813 in Tn, and their daughters; Elizabeth b. ca 1859 TX, and Sallie b. ca 1864 LA. Alfred showed to be b. ca 1819 KY and his father b. VA, mother b. SC.
