My son was born in Sewell-Long Hospital in 1955. The hospital closed
many years ago and was turned into an apartment house. Later it was torn
down and I think there is a vacant lot there now. It was on Pearl Street
between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Since the name of everything has changed and
I no longer live in Belton its hard to describe, but it was behind the
bus station on Main Street. The old Carnegie Library (now the Bell
County Museum) is directly across the street from the old Post Office
(now ???) and the bus station was in the middle of the block next to the
Post Office. It is some sort of government office now; I think Soil
Conservation, or maybe even some kind of probation office. Sewell
Hospital was a long, low one story building. It replaced the old
two-story hospital that was on the corner of Pearl and 2nd Avenue, which
was turned into a hotel when the new hospital was built. I believe that
building is gone now, too. The only picture I have seen of the
Sewell-Long Hospital is on an aerial picture of Belton my dad took years
ago, and you can't really tell anything about the hospital in the picture
it's so small.
