Subject: [TXBELL] Mtn Vw Cem in the news

Oct 7,'04

Hi everyone,
The Mountain View Cemetery was on the local channel 6 news tonight, at 6
and 10 pm. The 6 pm clip had us worried. It seemed too focused on the
developer/owners. There was no mention of cemetery details, history nor of
our plans of how to care for the cemetery. The second clip, at 10 pm, gave
more detail about the cemetery but ended with a comment from city hall
saying the developers own it and he can decide what to do with it. I will
again enlighten city hall to the fact that anyone can own a cemetery but the
plots, bodies and statuary belong to the descendants, that if there are none
then they belong to the state.... not the cemetery owner.
There was much information left out of the news report but I hope some
good comes from this. I dearly hate being in front of a camera. Hopefully,
Harker Heights City Hall will get an earful or letters from concerned
citizens.

One bit of great news is the developers have extended the northern
boundary by 80+ feet. A 30 feet wide area of this extension had been
surveyed with a magnetometer (partially paid for by the developers). This
info was told earlier to one lady that was interviewed today. She was
possibly taken out of context by the media to come across as concerned the
developers were going to build atop graves. I am hoping this does not hinder
the progress very recently made.

The developers have not been any less concerned about the cemetery than
city hall has been. Both have been of some help, both have been naughty at
one time or another.

This has been a long and ongoing process but I am beginning to see things
taking shape. I have lost sleep, cried, been angry, been ecstatic and mostly
very frustrated with protecting Mtn Vw Cem. City Hall told me, "You won,
Charlotte". What did I win? "You got the developers to do a magnetometer
survey and you are getting 80+ feet added to the north side". No, I have not
won till there is a "good" fence around it and it is protected, then
restoration can begin.

Where we are now, is for the developers to submit the new plat that shows
this 80+ feet change then for the city to approve it. Next, the surveyor to
do his thing and mark the corners. Then that area can be dedicated as the
cemetery so a protective fence can be errected. Whew! All of this takes lots
of time to happen.

Y'all take care,
Charlotte Allman
