Subject: Abuse of Genealogy Information

As a responsible genealogist, I do not share information for living
people, on list or websites. Most, if not all of the software programs
allow us to block the names of living individuals.
My personal feeling is that our US government is largely responsible
for criminals using our Social Security numbers to steal our identity.
Some years ago military ids numbers become the service number, colleges
and other organizations also use Social Security numbers for
identification.
I am not sure what can be done now that the cat is out of the bag, but
we, as individuals and responsible genealogist, can avoid becoming part
of the problem by not sharing information about living people with
strangers.
Thanks to Joe and all the list managers, webmasters, libriaries,
archives, and others who are posting information and documents online
for research purposes, genealogy research is much easier. We the
consumers should make every effort to protect the identity and privacy
of living relatives. The quality of future genealogical research
depends on us.
Joe, you are doing a great job. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!
