Hello all!

I was so grateful to find this list, because who better to ask about the
history of Bowie, TX and surroundings than those who either live there or
are researching there.

My grandfather, John Herschel EWING, was a farmer near Bowie in the '20's
until he died 3 Jan 1926 as the result of contracting typhoid fever. It
has always seemed odd to me that there should have been an outbreak of
typhoid in the dead of winter, but that seems to have been the case.

John Herschel EWING, along with my Grandmother Nannie Cordelia Pirtle
EWING, had a family of 7 children. It is my understanding through oral
family history that all the children and my grandmother contracted the
fever that winter. My grandfather abandoned all other tasks to care for
his wife and children, following them into quarantine in some large
building there in Bowie (I have heard "armory" and I have heard "church").
Just as the crisis was passed by my mother, Dorothy Lee, who was an infant
at the time and the last to suffer the disease, John Herschel fell ill and
passed away from the fever combined with his exhausted and weakened
physical condition.

I am writing an article for my family history organization, Clan Ewing in
America, about John Herschel and the typhoid epidemic which took his life.
Although I never met my grandfather ( dead nearly 20 years before my birth
), I want to honor him in this way by telling his story.

I would like to hear from anyone who knows anything at all about that
typhoid epidemic--how wide-spread it was, how many died ( approx ), how
were the community and county of Bowie affected, and just any small tidbits
of information that might add depth to the story I hope to tell.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give,

CarolSue Hair
