Oh yes,
I remember the NYA camp in Avery, When I graduated from high /school
I went to the camp. They paid $10.50 for 2 weeks and we went back
home for two weeks. I have forgotten how many weeks I was there. I
would
hitch hike there and back. I learned a lot about brick laying and wood
work.
There were two pretty girls who lived where the road to the camp left the
high
way and when we took the pick up and went into town for milk we would
give
them a ride.
Then I went to Marshall TX for a full time NYA camp and learned to
operate
heavy machine equipment and was picked to go to Beaumlont TX to work in
a company which made oilwell drilling equipment. Later 4 more boys came
down and joined me. Then I went into the Army Air Force for the next 31
years.
but the confidance I got in the NYA stood this old country boy in good
stead.
oh yes I remember the NYA. and that was in 1940.

NYA may have stood for National Youth Administration. However it was
discontinued in 1943. The camps they used may have been used afterwards.
Perhaps someone in the Avery area may have more info about a camp there.
You can get quite a bit of info about NYA by putting
National+Youth+Administration into a search engine. Marland Old
