I am seeking information on John Clark Ross b.1841 in Erriboll, Sutherland,
who founded Rossville in Atascosa County together with his brother William
Fraser Mather Ross, b.1850.
He is reputed to have come over with his first wife from Scotland (do not
know who his first wife was) and landed with his brother in Galveston on 5
Feb 1867. The passenger list for the Havelock (Hancock?) lists W.F.M. Ross,
but there is no obvious entry for John. There is a J.C.Rose (sic) from
Scotland but his age is way too old. There is a Jane Ross aged 23, who
would be the right age for John's first wife. As John is said to have been
a blockade runner in the Civil War perhaps he came out first and sent for
his wife and brother to come over together?
John is said to have become a manager on the McNeel/McNeill plantation
somewhere in Brazoria County, where his first wife and infant son died in a
fever epidemic. This must have been between 1867 and 1869. If I could find
the name of this first wife and trace the marriage over here, this might
help me track the rest of the family down and plot their movements after
leaving Sutherland. Our descent is from a sister Annie who stayed behind
but is 'lost' in the 1860s!!
I know a lot about John and William once they settled in Atascosa County
after 1870, but would dearly like to know exactly what happened after the
ship landed at Galveston. Can anyone tell me where the McNeel plantations
were and whether I could locate burial records for John's wife and child?
Any information gratefully received
