Ms King,

Thank you for the 'offline' research avenues you suggested. I have found that many of them are closer at hand than I realized, as I live close to Clayton Library in Houston.

Looking more closely at the 1870 census, I note that for all four children, the father is 'foreign born' and the mother is not. This suggests (although it does not prove) that Abo and Emma are the parents. Emma has no foreign born parents; African born Abo is not her father according to this census.

Frank's age of 6 is consistent with the age of 46 given in the 1910 census. Could the fluctuations in birth years be because slave births were unrecorded?

You're most likely right that SHILOAH didn't change into KISER. My provisional conclusion, until I find evidence to the contrary, is that KISER is Emma's name and the family switched from Abo's name to Emma's. I have records of both of Frank CHIZER's marriages. Now that I know to look for KISER as well, I'll search for those too.

I want to thank you, TreeMother at the rootsweb mailing list, and David for the insight you have given me. What was a 'dead-end' branch on my tree now has many fascinating possibilites.
