I am requesting any help on Fred and Ada THOMPSON. They lived and died in
San Benito. Fred was born October 4, 1882 (place unknown - but definitely
not Texas) and died August 24, 1963. Ada Scaief Thompson was born September
22, 1886 in Arkansas and died March 20, 1982. They had 6 children: Melva,
Lowell, Martin, Opal, Metha, and Clyde. Nothing is known about Fred.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Margaret

Margaret,
Did they live in the city proper or as is more often the case, farm the land
around the city? This would help narrow things down quite a bit.
There were quite a few immigrants from Arkansas to the Valley in the
mid 1920's including my grandfather's family, who settled in the
Rangerville area. My grandmother's family, from Minnesota, settled
on "Minnesota Road" which is now Landrum Park Road.
I am still doing a bit of searching regarding your THOMPSON family but
wanted to ask this question first and also on-list because I wanted
to point out the fact that there were many small named communities
that weren't cities but would provide big clues for genealogists.
Also, have you gotten Fred's DCT and does it provide parents' names
and place of birth?
The SCAIEF family owned a fabric store for many, many years in San
Benito. The store was directly opposite the county building on Sam
Houston. It is still extant but has moved to Harlingen since San
Benito's downtown is dying :-( I have been to the San Benito SCAIEF
fabric store as a child with my mother and grandmother. This is a
number for the store, courtesy of my mom: (800) 221-1739. There
are folks from Corpus Christi that go down there to shop! She
believes the current owners are a Betancourt who married a Scaief
daughter.
