ALANTHA MARY MARTIN
Alantha Mary Martin, age 96, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at Dolly
Vincent Hospital in San Benito. Born Oct. 31, 1910 in San Benito, she lived
most of her life in Brownsville and was a life-long member of the Central
Christian Church in Brownsville.
She is predeceased by her husband, Noverta G. Martin; her son, David Martin;
her brother, Custer C. Driver; and her sister, Beulah Bowman. She is
survived by her daughter, Sylvia Martin; and her niece, Gail Driver
Trumbauer.
For the past two years she was a resident of Rancho El Eden in Brownsville.
The daughter of Dr. John H. Driver, the town doctor for Brownsville from
about 1915 to 1945, she had a strict upbringing. When her future husband,
Noverta, came calling, Dr. Driver hit him over the head with a pot. Since
Dr. Driver was the town doctor, he had to stitch up Noverta's head.
When she married, Noverta, who worked for Pan Am, arranged for her to elope
in the cargo compartment of a mail plane. In the 1930s, she enjoyed going to
the Brownsville Country Club, where she played golf with her friends. Every
Wednesday was ladies' day, and you could play a game of golf for a dime, and
a golf ball was a nickel.
She lived a quiet life after her husband passed away, caring for her
daughter and generously donating to many charities. She was a devout
Christian. She loved her many cats, old movies, sweets and desserts, and her
favorite song was "I'm In the Mood for Love." She was a very special person,
and she will be missed by her small, but loving family.
A memorial service will be held at the Central Christian Church, 1100 E.
Alton Gloor Blvd., Brownsville, today, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, during the 11
