Harlingen Happenings
November 8, 2009
Mary Torres
On October 30, 2009, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation
designating Wednesday, November 11, 2009 as Veterans Day. The proclamation
states: â We have a sacred trust with those who wear the uniform of the
United States of America. From the Minutemen who stood watch over Lexington
and Concord to the service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan,
American veterans deserve our deepest appreciation and respect.â The
President encouraged all Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice of
our veterans through appropriate public ceremonies and private prayers and
called upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the
United States and to participate in patriotic activities in their
communities. He also called on all Americans, including civic and fraternal
organizations, places of worship, schools, and communities to support this
day with commemorative expressions and programs.
Veterans Day, a legal public holiday, is observed in the United States to
honor veterans of the armed services and to commemorate the armistice that
ended World War in 1918. The following Veterans Day observances will be held
in Harlingen:
· 4 PM, Veterans Day Parade at the Iwo Jima Memorial
· 5 PM, A special ceremony at the new Harlingen Police Department in Fair
Park
· 7 PM Veterans Day Ceremony with special recognition of all World War II
Veterans. The ceremony will be held in the newly remodeled Harlingen
Municipal Auditorium in Fair Park with Capt. Stephen Berch, USMC as guest
speaker and music for the ceremony provided by Jean Jentsch, Vanessa
Hinojosa, Carlos Cañas and Natalie Montez. For more information contact Art
Cohan at 956-202-3054.
Did you know that in 2008 there were 23.2 million veterans in the United
States? Please remember to honor veterans not only on Veterans Day and make
a concentrated effort to preserve their stories so that their families,
other Americans and future generations will know about their service to our
Country and the sacrifices they made to ensure the freedoms that we enjoy
today.
