Betty,
Thanks. I looked at the Cherokee County site and did not see this. I guess
I didn't look far enough or just over looked it.
These are some of the names I was looking for:
Mayfield, W.B. 8-29-1853 d. 10-31-1928
Mayfield, Onie J. 10-4-1855 d. 11-13-1919 (wife of W.B.)
Smith, S.E. 5-7-1855 d. 8-26-1887
Smith, Julius H. 10-16-1852 d. 5-16-1934
Smith, Sarah Roxanna 2-8-1856 d. 10-14-1932
Smith, John 7-17-1827 d. 11-1-1908
Smith, Susan 6-21-1833 d. 12-17-1922 (wife of John)
Smith, Samuel 8-12-1802 d. 4-30-1870 (born in Switzerland, emigrated to the
U.S. in 1819)
Smith, Oney 12-25-1804 d. 7-12-18_?_ (born in Knoxville, Tennessee)
*****The last two were man & wife, had cement vault graves and cement slabs
were
both broken and illegible to read.
Onie J. Mayfield was a granddaughter of Samuel and Oney Smith. I believe
that John was their daughter. I was also looking for Onie Mayfield's mother,
Mary (Polly) Smith Hibbs Chambers. And Onie's sister Hannah E. Hibbs who
married James D. Heflin.
My main interest is in James D. Heflin.
Below is the text of a message that I sent last night to others who are
interested in James Heflin:
Benjamin Hibbs died before 22 Mar 1860 leaving Mary with two minor
daughters, Hannah E., who married James David Heflin on 30 Nov 1869, and
Oney J., who married W. B. Mayfield on 30 Dec 1871. Mary, called Polly,
and the two girls were living with her parents in 1860.
Mary married William Chambers on 26 Oct 1863. The 1870 census shows
Mary Hibbs (not Chambers) and 14-year-old daughter, Oney. A 17-year-old
William B. Mayfield was living next door as a farm laborer at that time
with a John Smith who was probably Mary's brother. James David Heflin is
found on the 1870 census as HEFFLEN, James, B. with wife, Hannah. In 1880,
Mary Smith Hibbs Chambers was living alone as Mary Hibbs. I have not found
any further record of either the Heflins or the Mayfields and I have done a
country-wide search on both Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest.
The Mayfield name is interesting because Josephine Boman, daughter of
Mary Heflin Boman (sister of David Green Heflin and aunt of James David
Heflin) married A. W. Mayfield on 15 December 1881 in Henderson County.
