My Great, Great Grandfather JESSE G. BEATY, b. 1820 in Virginia married
SUSAN B. NELMS, b. 1818 in Russellville, Logan County Kentucky on December
27, 1841 in the same county. They had two sons, JOHN SAMUEL BEATY, b. 1842,
THOMAS WILLIAM BEATY, b. 1844 and one infant girl, all born in Logan County,
Kentucky.
About 1845, The BEATY'S and SUSAN NELMS' family including her parents and
siblings moved to PETERS COLONY on White Rock Creek. Sickness broke out in
the colony and SUSAN and her infant daughter died. It is believed that they
buried near White Rock Creek somewhere. JESSE G. BEATY and his sons moved
back to Kentucky where he re-married in 1846 to EVELYN M. SIMMONS. His sons
JOHN SAMUEL BEATY and THOMAS WILLIAM BEATY moved back to Fannin County
sometime before the 1860 census was taken. At that time JOHN SAMUEL BEATY
was in the household of his maternal Uncle CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS (C. C.)
NELMS and THOMAS WILLIAM BEATY was in the household of his maternal
Grandparents, JOHN ARCHIBALD and MARY BELLE CRAIN NELMS. The boys were
seventeen years old plus.
When the Civil War started, JOHN SAMUEL and THOMAS WILLIAM BEATY enlisted in
the Confederate Army and was later transfered to the Company H, 9th Texas
Infantry. JOHN SAMUEL and THOMAS WILLIAM went to Logan County, Illinois
after the Civil War ended. JOHN SAMUEL remained there, but THOMAS WILLIAM
BEATY married ANNIE GUSTA HILL there and they returned to Fannin County,
Texas. They owned property in the ASH GROVE area near ECTOR. This was
probably land that they inherited from their Grandmother MARY BELLE CRAIN
NELMS. Their children were MAGNOLIA BEATY, b. October 05, 1867, ANNA LAURA
BEATY, b. September 02, 1869, ARMOND VERCHOIL BEATY, b. July 27, 1871,
JESSIE LEE BEATY, b. December 12, 1873, JOHN WILLIAM BEATY, b. May 06, 1880
and my Grandfather GEORGE CLINTON BEATY, b. May 04, 1883. All were born in
Fannin County. MAGNOLIA married Norris HOUCHENS and moved to Oklahoma; ANNA
LAURA died in 1871; ARMOND VERCHOYLE was killed by outlaws in Oklahoma after
they robbed him of the money he got for selling a small heard of cattle;
JESSIE LEE married SAMUEL PRESTON MYERS in Ellis County; JOHN WILLIAM
married first, ADDIE FINNEY and next to her sister ETHEL FINNEY and fled to
Mississippi before returning to south Texas; GEORGE CLINTON married MATTIE
DELLA BYRD whose parents were ELY CLINTON and DORA LOUISA ALICE ESSARY, they
