Hello to Harrison County researchers!
I'm getting ready to start the September newsletter for the Harrison County
Genealogical Society. If you have any articles about your family to
contribute, please send to me by e-mail. They should be about a page in
length and pertain to your ancestors who lived in the county at some point
in time.
We also have the "Brick Wall" column, so if you have an ancestor that you're
absolutely stumped on (don't we all?!), send that in, too.
Something else I want you all to be aware of - the historic old courthouse
that occupies the downtown square in Marshall is in danger of being locked
up for good. This beautiful old building houses the Harrison County
Historical Museum and the Research Library that so many of you have used.
We were unsucessful in obtaining a state grant for funds to restore the
building, so the Harrison County Commissioners set a Bond Election for
August 12. There is opposition to this - even though the rise in taxes is
minimal (only about $5.00 a year for a $50,000 piece of property).
If you live in the county, I urge you to vote on Saturday. If you have
relatives in the county, please remind them to vote. If you do not live in
the county, you can write a Letter to the Editor of the Marshall News
Messenger, 309 E. Austin, Marshall, TX 75670, including your name and
address. Or call 903-935-7918, for your feelings to be reflected in the
Speak Out! column, which seems to be read by more people than any other part
of the newspaper, since you don't have to leave your name.
I usually do not encourage or allow political messages to this list, but
this issue goes far beyond politics, in my estimation. I hope that I do not
have to report in the next newsletter that our courthouse will soon be
locked up.
Good luck to all in your research.

Gail Brown, Coordinator
