Subject: [TXHENDER-L] Diary of Benjamin Griffin
Date: Sat, 2 May 1998 14:26:50 EDT

I am looking for the diary of Benjamin Griffin who served in the 27th Texas
Cav. Regt. Confederate Army from March 7, 1862 until February 1865.
He was captured December 18, 1862 at Oakland, MS, but managed to escape. He
was again captured in April, 1863, near Franklin, Tennessee, remaining in
Northern Prisons until the end of the Civil War. While in Northern Prisons, he
wrote a diary about his life. He is also said to have written some lengthy and
ponderous religious essays. In 1866, Benjamin was appointed Pastor of the
First Baptist Church of Henderson, Texas and in same year married Mrs. Harris
Edens. They had one daughter in 1867, her name is unknown to me. Benjamin died
in 1868 of complications from war related injuries, and is buried at the New
Prospect Cemetery, Henderson, Texas.
A copy of this Diary was said to have been given to the Centennial Chapter of
the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Henderson, Texas, by James Crews, a
descendants of Benjamin Griffin.
If anyone knows where a copy of this diary is, or where Cousin James Crews or
his descendants are, I would love to know.
I would like the E-mail address of the Henderson Historical Society.
Mrs. Virginia Neff of the genealogy department gave it to me and I have
misplaced it somewhere in my huge collection of what my kids call junk. I
don't have to explain that to anyone who does genealogy.
Thank you everyone!
Darlene Griffin Maloy
