Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 16:33:46 EDT
Hello the lists and the cousins, get ready--heres another Epistle of judy
.(grinjudy)
Hello my friend, There are two cemetery books on milam co. ONEHUNDRED AND
SEVENTY YEARS OF BURIALS IN MILAM CO. BY NORINNE HOLDER HOLMAN. Checking
specifically for burials around Milam co. town of Rogers. and any overlap
into Bell.
she has also listed some, cemeteries in the other counties that share borders
with Milam co.
These Collins people of ours were very poor. Eliza jane POUNDS Collins did
not ever get a pension on MESHACK-as he got sick and came home and did not
serve long enough to qualify. We do have some copies of roll call thanks to
cathy.
His son, JOHNSON COLLINS did get a pension and oddly enough there is NO
mortuary warrant on it for JOHNSON collins, but mention of death of his wife
sarah jane COURSEY COLLINS who died at the home of her daughter, witnesses:
I.J. MANKINS and ELIZA ALVIS (december 1925).
Appeared at the hearing was J.A.COURSEY, gave testimony that Johnson was
indeed in the CSA.
(there was a letter inclosed from a mrs. J.A. Coursey of CLICK ROUTE, LLamo,
tx.inquiry as to the records of Johnson collins military? dec. 1925-reason
not given)
Johnson collins served in two texas units. first was:
private in Co.C. 9th Nichols Regiment, texas Infantry. enlisted oct.8, 1861
and was mustered out after 6 months with his company in April 24, 1862.
Johnson Collins also served in the CSA as a private in CO.K. 16th Regiment
Texas Infantry, enlisted may 13, 1862, in Montgomery County, tx. to serve
during the war.
His age at the time of enlistment was given as 27 years old born MS. On the
co. roll dated August 31, 1863 he is reported as absent on sick furlough in
Texas from March 28, 1863. His name is not borne on the only subsquent co.
roll on file. Which covers the period January and Feb. 1864. pension # 41638
Note: from judy: Does anyone know why Sarah Jane Collins, wife or widow of
Johnson Collins waited until 1925 to apply for pension-specifically this
mortuary warrant application by her grandson and daughter.? DID she own too
much land to get money earlier? DID Johnson live longer and farm and they
didn't need a pension? Any ideas? Her address is given as street number
3,rogers, texas. Milam co.
Mrs Jane Collins (widow of Johnson collins) died on 4 day of Jan. 1926. near
the town of Rogers county of BELL. TX. in the home of mrs C.A. ALVIS.

These are the burials we seek:
1. Johnson COllins CSA,b.1837? date of death after 1880?Williamson co.
tx. died in wagon accident.
Possible burial close to a place called: Rattlesnake Inn.
2. Sarah Jane COLLINS, date of death, January 4, 1926 close to Rogers
(milam and Bell)
3. MESHACK COLLINS, father of Johnson, b. 1815, Date of death, After 1880
Williamson?
4. Eliza JANE COLLINS, mother of Johnson, born 1815 Date of death,
possible January 12, 1895.
Close to a place called: BUSHY CREEK? Williamson co. tx.
We are prettysure that one of the Collins girls married a Whitmire man. We
know that a MR. J.E. Collins married M.C. Whitmire 28 jan 1883 in williamson
co. (thanks to judy horick)
James Collins married Lilia Compton 18 aug. 1884 williamson co. and thanks to
Ralph Love we think the Compton family and the Whitmire family are cousins in
Williamson.
the big question: Does any of the Compton and Whitmire farms have burials on
them, possibly, Alvis, and Collins? ARE there any funeral home records for
years after 1880 in williamson co.? What about county burials of indigent
families?
I would like to know where the other children of Johnson Collins, were
living after 1880 till 1826.And, WE do not know where all the siblings of
Johnson Collins and Victoria were living after 1880 until 1826? Our thinking
is maybe some of these descendants will know the burials, have funeral cards,
or pictures of the graves? Does the Collins researchers know of any of their
lines that are in bell, milam or williamson co.'s that may have been present
at the funerals we are seeking?
I am trying every possibility I can imagine or create to find the data we
need on these old grandpa and grandma's . All of the cousins, DODD and
COLLINS, appreciate and thank all who have helped put just the knowledge on
this page together. It is an effort of many. Thanks again.
All ideas and help appreciated. Judy hugg grimes, Yorba linda, ca.
