Nichols: Georgia to Smith Co., Texas
Part two of six; Hannah Nichols
I have a great story about Hannah Nichols written by Buster Foster, a
direct descendant of Hannah Nichols, and I will be glad to share it with
anyone interested. It is more than 20 pages in length, but I have it as a
computer file which I can send. Hannah Nichols was married to John
Barnett Dickson when they moved to the Starrville area in 1858. The story
tells a lot about the early days in Starrville.

There is some confusion about whether Hannah's first husband was Bryan
or Bryant. All of Hannah's children died young. Her youngest daughter
died on the trip to Texas, but two grandchildren survived, and great
grandchildren were born at Starrville, Smith Co., Texas. There were no
children born to Hannah Nichols and John Barnett Dickson. I believe
Hannah Nichols Bryant(t) Dickson was buried in Smith Co., Texas.
The following are some census data I reviewed on microfilm at the
San Antonio Public library using published indexes:
1850 census of Bibb Co., Georgia
In the 482 District, Page 215, Dwelling/Family 29/29
John Dickson, 70, male, farmer, born Georgia
Value of real estate $1100
In the same household were:
Hannah Dickson, 45, female, born Georgia and
Sarah Bryant, 30, female, born Georgia. [note, she was a Bryant]
These three people had neat ditto marks in the "place born" column
from the word "Georgia," located on the census sheet, well above
their names. The ditto marks look like they could have been added
later, but not necessarily. The central part of "Bryant" is not clear,
but it definitely ends with a "t." There are a lot of Dixons in the
neighborhood.
1860 census of Smith Co., Texas
In the Starrville District, Sheet 78
John Dickson, 80, male, farmer, born N. Carolina
Real estate $2000, personal estate $10000.
In the same household were:
Hannah Dickson, 55, female, born Georgia and
Mary Dickson, 4, female, born Georgia and
Jane Dickson, 2, female, born Georgia.
Note: John's birthplace changed from Georgia to N. Carolina.
Note: Hannah's birthplace of Georgia looks deliberately written.
Mary and Jane are grandchildren. NOTE: Buster Foster says John
Dickson died about 1856, but he is found in this 1860 census.
Also in the 1860 census of Smith Co., Texas
In the Starrville District, Sheet 75, Page 114
James Dickson, 35, male, farmer, born Georgia.
Real estate $1500, personal estate $5000.
In the same household were:
Mary Dickson, 4, female, born Georgia
Jane Dickson, 3, female, born Georgia.
Note: It looks like Mary and Jane Dickson got counted twice, with a
minor age difference.
I could not find the Dicksons listed above in the 1870 census of
Smith Co., Texas or in any county north or east of Smith Co. (Gregg,
Upshur or Wood). All I found was in the dwelling/family 43/545,
240 District, Page 79: Sarah Dickson, 20, female, white, born Texas,
no occupation, can read and write. Sarah was in the household of
Ann Kendrick, 47, female, white, with real estate $1000, personal
estate $700, born Alabama, cannot read or write. There also was a
Clary Dickson, 14, female, black, farm laborer with the Jackson
family. Sarah may not have been related.
John Nichols. San Antonio, Texas.
