I have the 1880's census listing for my great grandparents (Cornelius and Jane Hamilton) in Wharton, TX. They were both alive with their 5 children. By 1881 my great grandfather was back in New York and remarried. I don't know what happened to my great grandmother. Two of their children were fostered to families in Texas. One son Cornelius Jr. (Nealy) was fostered to a family named Thatcher and my grandfather Robert was fostered to another family, I think their name was Gallahar. I believe their only daughter Elizabeth (Lizzy) was fostered to another family. I don't know who, but I do know she died in Wharton as a little girl @1885. Does anyone know what people did back then when they left their children behind? Did they just leave their children with other people to raise or did they have to fill out any paper work? How do I find out? Was there any illness going on in Wharton around 1880. I know this is a lot to be asking for, but all I need is a direction to go.!
Thank you,
Kathleen
