Re Welsh emigrants to Ohio. There were two or three major spots that the
Welsh settled in Ohio, none in northern Ohio, although there may have
been some settlements in Warren (where my father, an Evans, was born). If
they settled in this area, they usually came through Pennsylvania and
were steel workers. Southern Ohio Welsh came down the Ohio River. The
northern Welsh, who were farmers, went to the Cincinnati area and
primarily north to the Lima area. The southern Welsh, who were from the
area around Swansea, which was and is industrial, went to Oak Hill in se
Ohio. There is a small Welsh museum in Oak Hill (the only one I know of
in the country), which you could reach by using information to get the
public library in Oak Hill and get the name of the woman who runs the
museum. There are several books available through your public library
which give the correspondence of the Welsh in Ohio back to their homes,
commenting on the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln, who they would refer to
as the father. There is also a book called Welsh Fever, which is about
15 years old now, but could provide contacts for you. I don't have time
to dig through my files for more information but hope this information
helps you. Good luck.
Julie
