Subject: [TSL] HOW TO REQUEST A LOOKUP
Date: Fri, 06 Feb 1998 12:51:19 -0800

AHOY SHIPMATES!

PLEASE help those people who take the time to do lookups! Read this message
and follow these instructions BEFORE posting a request for a lookup!!!

THERE WERE THOUSAND OF SHIPS which carried emigrants to numerous ports in
anyone of several countries. And there were MILLIONS of emigrants!
In order to get a good answer, and hopefully find YOUR emigrant ancestor,
YOU MUST PROVIDE SOME NECESSARY INFORMATION!

SO PLEASE - BEFORE posting your request, gather the necessary info and follow
these instructions when requesting a lookup.
They are IMPORTANT - so please take a minute to READ them!

There are many people on the list who are willing to do lookups, but you
NEED to provide THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

1) SUBJECT LINE: NO SURNAMES IN SUBJECT LINE!!!
PUT country of origin, port of entry and YEAR OF EMIGRATION.
Like: "Lookup:Germany>NY>1840's" Something to that effect to get the
attention of those people who have those records.
If you know the name of the ship - put THAT in the Subject Line!

2) NAME OF YOUR ANCESTOR, year born, age at time of emigration, spouse or
other family members travelling with them, country of origin and port of
entry, and YEAR of emigration. If you do not know some of this info, then
at least give your best estimate, based on the facts you do have. Put this
information in the body of your message - NOT IN THE SUBJECT LINE.

3) NO MORE THAN TWO lookup requests per email message. If they pertain to
totally different time periods and/or countries or port of entries - then
post a seperate message for each. And please keep your message to the point
- no long history, no detailed info on their life AFTER they arrived, etc.
This kind of info does not have anything to do with when or how they
emigrated. Only give info directly related to their emigration.

4) BE SPECIFIC -
DO NOT ask for the names of all ships from Ireland in 1855, or all ships into
New York in 1847. There are way TOO MANY and no such lists in that format.

DO NOT ask for 'any ships containing the name Ancestor Jones'.
There are way TOO MANY and records are not listed like that.

YOUR REQUEST NEEDS TO BE SPECIFIC - ESPECIALLY AS FAR AS THE YEARS & PORT OF
ARRIVAL/COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, ETC.

Again, keep in mind - most people doing lookups, subscribe to many lists.
They do not read every single message - they scan the SUBJECT LINES.
IT IS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE TO USE THE SUBJECT LINE TO GET THEIR ATTENTION!

Also, there are about 1600 people on this list - so be patient. Some folks
have records right in front of them - others make weekly trips to a library
or National Archive. We also post url's that contain passenger lists and
other important info related to finding your emigrant ancestor. So watch the
messages and check out some of these urls. There online for that reason!

If your not getting any response to your request - then it is usually because
you have been TOO VAGUE in the information you provided. So try again and be
more specific.

ALSO - Check out our previous Online Digests and/or searchable database of
messages. You will find many of your questions have already been answered
and also links to MANY sites containing passenger lists/lists of ships and
other important emigration information.

TheShipsList Digest's On-Line at:

http://www.chignecto.net/TheShipsList is a database archive of postings to
The Ship's List. It is "full-text indexed", so it is fully searchable by
