Could someone please explain to a newbie to the list the the meaning of the
phrase "Palatinate emigrants" which appears in the subject Digest?

From my genealogical researches a palatine/palatinate(?) earldom was an
earldom in which the earl had or had assumed all the powers of kingship.

Therefore "Palatinate emigrants" would to me suggest enforced migration -
transportation - as in the same vein of hyperbole as "detained under Her
Majesty's pleasure" usually means jailed for an indeterminate period.

So were these migrants convicts?
