And then in 1950 ....???
It looks like you might have skipped a generation or something ...
There weren't two many ... if any passenger SAILING ships being used in
1950, except for short vacation cruses. Could your information have
said, "They sailed on a ship ... meaning they took a steamship?

They came married in Germany and together to the USA ca. 1950 in
steerage on a sailboat journey that lasted 90 days.
They then worked as a butler & maid for a family on 5th Avenue in New
York City, for a year or so while saving money for the remainder of the
journey.
