Hi
I have found a little goldmine, visiting an older member of the family
today, I have spent the good part of the day reading and looking it over,
there is much information here, as well as a day to day diary of JOSEPH
CARRUTHERS journey across the ocean
They left Maryport, England on THE CONGRESS on AUG 15, 1852 and landed in
Ogdensburgh, N.Y. USA on Sept 30, 1852, at which time they took what he
calls a "steam packet" to Lewiston.
In the diary it states that THE ROYALIST left the same day from the same
port, and were sailing together, they seen each other on the 19th of Aug
and saluted each other.
I do not have a complete list of people sailing on it, but in other notes
it states that his wife Sarah MAWSON, was in the company of her parents
Joseph and Elizabeth Mawson, 2 sisters and 4 brothers,Joseph her husband
brought with him one sister, Margaret, another sister and his parents
stayed in England.
In the diary, he had I think a little store and there is a list of peoples
names he did business with along with the towns they came from. There are
also notes on (very few and mostly family) that owed him money and for what.
Well as I read on, I may have more....Anyone know anything about this ship??
thanks
Cathy Wagner
