There was a ship called HALIFAX which sailed regularly to Halifax from
Boston in 1889, and another called HALIFAX CITY, which sailed from London
to Halifax, but beginning in 1894. You don't suppose that he landed in
Boston, then took the 'coaster' to Halifax! Dominion Line had ships with
Canadian city names in 1889, such as TORONTO, VANCOUVER, SARNIA etc.
There were 111 ships from Liverpool and Glasgow, to Quebec and Halifax in
1889, 30 of those sailed from Glasgow. Do you have an idea about the time
of year, that would help narrow it down. The Halifax arrivals are on
microfilm reel number C-4514 and the Quebec arrivals on C-4536 and C-4537.
The passenger manifests are on Microfilm at the National Archives of Canada,
in Ottawa (NAC). The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of arrival.
You can borrow this reel on an Inter Library Loan (ILL). You can find the
details for this procedure at this URL
http://www.archives.ca/www/Genealogy.html
You are also able to ILL from Ottawa, to libraries in the US, and outside
North America. These microfilms contain arrivals from ALL ports. The
Latter Day Saints [LDS] also have these arrivals on film, for the port of
Quebec
LDS number 0889460 ~ 1889 and for the port of Halifax LDS number 0889433 ~
1889 to 1891
Best of Luck,
Sue
