Hi Elaine,

The DUKE OF SUTHERLAND was a 3,013 gross ton iron built steamer, built for
the Ducal Line by Duncan, Port Glasgow in 1873. She had a speed of 11 knots.
On 10th Dec.1883 she commenced a single round voyage from London via Suez to
Melbourne and Sydney under charter to the Colonial Line. Chartered by
British India Line in 1884 she started sailings between London, Suez,
Batavia and Brisbane on 11th Aug.1884. She continued this service until
making her last sailing on 25th Jul.1902. In 1904 she was sold to W.& A.
McArthur and renamed MACQUARIE and in 1906 was resold to US owners and
renamed HANAMET. She was scrapped at Danzig (Gdansk) in 1925. [North Star to
Southern Cross by John M.Maber]

Hope this helps
Ted
