Chris,
I looked at the ships names that are currently listed at
http://istg.rootsweb.com/ and found your ship JOHANNE from Bremen to
New York but the year was 1835 and no Bartel. The surname list had
some Bartel and Bartels, but no Martin Bartel.
It's a start.
