Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this list. I hope someone can help me. I just received my
great grandfather's "Declaration of Intention" today. His name in
America was Joseph Nathan Gellis. Gellis was not his original name. I
don't know what it was. The Declaration states he arrived on May 20,
190?. The last number is written in a strange manner, but appears to be
a "4". The Etruria arrived in NYC on May 21 in 1904. So, I think this
is correct. I need to find out his original name. I think I could find
out what it is if I could search the passenger manifest for that date.

I've tried the Ellis Island website, but you have to search by surname.
Apparently, you can't just search by ship/date. Does anyone know of any
way I could search the manifest or would anyone have a copy of it?

Information: Joseph Nathan Gellis, born June 10, 1876 in Suwalk,
Russia. He was Jewish, 5'8", brown hair, brown eyes. He departed from
Liverpool, England. He was married, but I'm not sure that his wife and
two children accompanied him on this trip. My grandmother (now
deceased) said that he came over first and then sent for the family.
This information would help find him on the manifest without knowing his
name.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions. (I live in Florida, so I can't
get to Ellis Island in person.)
