The TAINUI was a 9,957 gross ton ship, length 477.8ft x beam 61.1ft, one
funnel, two masts, twin screw, speed 14 knots with accommodation for 40-1st,
75-2nd and 400-3rd class passengers.
Built by Workman, Clark & Co, Belfast in 1908 for Shaw Savill & Albion Line,
she started her maiden voyage to Wellington on 12th Nov.1908. In 1917 she
came under the liner requisition scheme and was used on government service
and on 8th Apr.1918 she was torpedoed and abandoned, but reboarded and taken
130 miles stern first to Falmouth. In 1921 she resumed commercial service
via the Panama Canal and in 1932 was converted to tourist class on;y. Her
final sailing to Wellington started on 25th Nov.1938 and she was then sold
for scrap. Acquired by the Ministry of Transport in 1939, she was renamed
EMPIRE TRADER and managed by Shaw Savill & Albion Line. On 21st Feb.1943 she
was torpedoed and damaged by U.92 while sailing from Newport and Belfast for
New York. She made for port escorted by HMCS DAUPHIN, which sank her the
next day at 47.40N 28.46W when she became unmanageable. All 106 people

My grandparents William & Ella GIBSON emigrated to New Zealand aboard this
ship, possibly with an assisted passage or through the Empire Settlement
Act.
