"Carol Hunter" <> asked: Are there any sights
for arrivals at Canadian ports that have newspaper articles of ship
arrivals or any info on voyages?
This information isn't online and by its nature, isn't really
suitable to be put online. Each item differs in size and content.
When answering questions, I normally check the Montreal Gazette for
Quebec arrivals (since 1776!) or the Halifax Chronicle. These are not
always the best source, (Quebec [City] papers often have more detail
- indeed the Gazette frequently copied them), but are available to me
on open shelves at the National Library. Other papers have to be
ordered from the collection.
For US queries, I use the New York Times; the main disadvantage being
that it started in September 1851 and missed the main Irish emigration
of the 1840s. Michael Palmer recommends the New York Herald (earlier
with better coverage); unfortunately not available at National Library
of Canada. Also the NYT rarely gives any detail about shipping matters
outside New York, if they are mentioned at all.
It is usually a simple look up to check the shipping column for an
arrival on known date, but incidents were often recorded in the
general news columns and are much harder to find and easier to miss.
