Hello again Tony. Here is the answer to the conundrum. Yes, there were two
vessels named SALISBURY built in 1866. In the supplement to the 1867
Lloyd's Register, I found this:
SALISBURY
Master: Captain Kedgley
Rigging: iron single screw steamer; 4 cemented bulkheads
Tonnage: 635 tons gross and 432 tons net
Dimensions: 187.4 feet long, 28.2 foot beam and holds 16.9 feet deep
Construction: 1866, Millwall in London
Propulsion: auxiliary steam engine producing 80 horsepower
Owners: Southampton Steam Col. & Coal Co. Ltd.
Port of registry: Southampton
Port of survey: London
Voyage: sailed on Coastal Trade
So, in conclusion, the SALISBURYs of 1866 were not the former MILLWALL. The
vessel that sailed to New Zealand would have been the 1,145 tons Ship. As
for British vessels with the same name at the same time, in any Lloyd's
Registers, there are hundreds of ELIZAs, JANEs and MARYs, just to name a
few. I hope this resolves the problem. Cheers.
