Subject: [TSL] BISN Co Records for the late 1800s

Hi,

I don't know if I have the right person, but I am sending several emails in
the hope that I will eventually strike it lucky. I am doing this research
for my daughters partner.

In 1881 Edward Woodcote Taylor West was a first or second mate on the BISN
Co. ship "Bhundara". This is according to the 1881 census.

Edward was born in 1861, so would have been about 20 at that stage.

As the family history tale has come down he has been told that one of his
great grandfathers' brothers was a "Captain who went down with his
ship". Edward was one of the brothers and so far the only relative we can
find with a sea background, and as such I am hoping he stayed with the BISN
Co, or at least they may know if he transferred somewhere else.

Could you please tell me how I can go about finding out what records (if
any) are available on Edward - his family, his career and maybe even his
death? Edwards descendants now live in New Zealand and are really
interested in finding out about their ancestry.

Also did any of your ships take passengers/immigrants to Canada. Another
brother is supposed to have gone to Canada and became a bank manager ( the
whole family appears to have been well educated). It would be too easy if
he sailed on one of his brothers ships.

Any help would be appreciated.
