Janet, I don't understand what you mean about coming up with 1889 on a
search. On her Description here
http://theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsP-Q.html it says "..On
16th Jun.1888 she commenced her first Hamburg - New York crossing for her
new owners... (Hamburg America Line)" so this looks like the particular
voyage (timing-wise) that your family took.
Maybe you were referring to online transcribed passenger lists only. The
passenger lists currently online are only a drop in the bucket of available
resources. You will need to consult the passenger list film for New York
July 1888. I can't advise you of the how-to but go here to Joe Beine's
site to read how to go about it.
