Hi John,

For a guide to tracing Master Mariners, see
http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKPages.htm and click on Merchant Navy.

TUSCAN STAR
7,930 gross tons, length 457.3ft x beam 63.3ft, one funnel, two masts,
single screw, speed 14 knots, accommodation for 35 passengers, reduced to 12
in 1948.
Completed by Harland & Wolff, Belfast in Oct.1945 as the EMPIRE CLARENDON
for the Ministry of War Transport, and managed by P & O. Steam Nav. Co. Ltd.
1946 Acquired by Frederick Leyland & Co and managed by Blue Star Line, 1947
renamed TUSCAN STAR. Aug.1948 renamed TIMARU STAR to conform with New
Zealand route namings. 1950 transferred to Lamport & Holt Line. 1958
transferred to the North American Pacific coast route renamed CALIFORNIA
STAR. 1959 reverted to Blue Star Line ownership, 1967 transferred to New
Zealand service, Mar.1968 laid up in the River Blackwater, 22nd Jun.1968
left London on her last NZ voyage. 21st Apr.1969 arrived Kaohsiung, Taiwan
for scrapping.

There were several Auckland Star's but this is probably the one.

AUCKLAND STAR
11,799 gross tons, length 572.3ft x beam 72.7ft, one funnel, one mast, twin
screw, speed 18.5 knots, refrigerated cargo space, accommodation for 12
passengers.
Launched on 2nd May 1958 by Cammel Laird & Co., Birkenhead for Salient
Shipping Co.(Bermuda) Ltd, Hamilton, Bermuda on bare boat charter to Blue
Star Line Ltd. 1962 transferred to the British flag. 10th Apr.1978 final
sailing from Liverpool. 20th May 1978 left Durban for demolition at Gadani
Beach.

The procedure at Gadani Beach is for the ship to be driven at full speed so
that she drives well up onto the beach. The crew are then taken off by
bosun's chair to the shore.

If he gained the OBE during the war, it should be recorded in "Ripley
Registers; Seedie's List of Awards to the Merchant Navy for Wold War II,
1997" Check with your local library.

regards
Ted
