Mr. Hawke was the Emigrant Agent for Upper Canada. He reported to Mr.
Buchanan at Quebec who was the Chief Emigrant Agent. Hawke's covered a
great deal of territory so some of the records are from Kingston and some
from Toronto. The records vary over the years. I have used the Hawke papers
and before you get too excited I should tell you a few things about them.
First, there is no index to these papers. Second, the papers consist mostly
of a series of letters (few names are mentioned), and accounts. If an
emigrant required assistance they might appear in the accounts as having
received money. Occasionally names appear in the letters if there was some
sort of problem or special circumstances.
That said, there are some good things in the papers which I have been
extracting and we have been putting on TSL web pages. For example:
