How wonderful to have the trunk, and yes!! it does hold clues.
1. "per l*n*oi*n Steamer" this could refer to a WILSON Line steamer which
would have been the "feeder ship" from Christiania (Oslo) to Hull, England
. . or . . it could refer to INMAN Line (which is repeated further down
your message) as your Nils sailed from Liverpool to New York, NY on an
Inman Line ship.
2. "through M Heitm*nn Christi*n" this clinches his Norway departure port
as well as his transatlantic shipping line, as H. Heitmann was the Inman
Line representative in Christiania. (M and H are easy transcription errors
especially as you say it was difficult to read)
100 Years of Emigrant Ships from Norway
http://www.norwayheritage.com/ships/index.asp
By selecting 1869 from the index of Norwegian departures 1825-1925
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_year.asp?ye=1869
. . we see several ships departing Christiania to Hull. By clicking on the
icon in the details column, we see the sailing dates AND and list of
connecting Inman Line sailings from Liverpool to New York.
I really wish you had included his age at emigration, however, moving on to
the
Norwegian Digitalarkivet - Emigration (protocol) - (go to "Source: categories")

Searching just for Nils and Hansen departing Christiania in 1869, I find
three, 1. aged 15 from Gusdal 2. married aged 32 from Eidsvold . . BUT,
both of these were to arrive via Quebec, on sailing ships.
3. [departing] May 1st 1869, Nils Hansen Fjeld [unmarried] 19 [from] ø.
Toten [destined to] Chikago and sailing to Hull on the Wilson Line feeder
ship Eko [sic Echo]
Nils was travelling with Ole Olsen Arnekstad, aged 21, also from Østre
Toten, and also destined to Chicago.
Going back to "100 Years of Emigrant Ships from Norway " it shows just one
trip for ECHO in 1869, and in fact she was lost later in 1869. It shows
she sailed Christiania-Hull direct, so probably only took two days. It
does not show a "connecting" Inman Line ship, however, the Wilson Line ship
ODER which departed on April 30th from Christiania, via Christiansand, to
Hull, arrived there on May 3rd, and the passengers connected with . . . .
.drumroll
Inman Line CITY OF BROOKLYN which departed Liverpool May 5th 1869, and
arrived at New York, NY on Saturday May 15th 1869. (I can't help you find
the NY list, but others can advise)
I certainly hope this was your Nils, and the difference in his "farm-name"
is the only catch Vegoe versus Fjeld. If it isn't him, we can go back to
the 'drawing board' as he may have been travelling with a different
patronym (there were 42 Nils who departed from Christiania in 1869)
Østre Toten is in Oppland fylke (State) so I went looking at the 1865
census on the Digitalarkivet.
I found 12 people living on the Fjeld søndre [Fjeld south] Farm, in two
households. Here is Nils family.
Karen Nilsdatter, aged 74 widowed and born Vestre Toton "Føderaadskone"
(not sure of translation)
Andreas Olsen, aged 47, married and son of Karen (I don't see his wife)
Johanne K. Olsdatter aged 40, unmarried and daughter of Karen
Nils Olaus Hansen aged 15, and son of Johanne <<---your Nils ??

I then checked for the Farm Name VEGOE and found six of them, but in Eker /
Eger, Buskerud fylke, and I found this

Nils Hansen aged 24 born Eger.
Hans Hansen, aged 62 - father
Maria Hansdatter aged 52 - mother
Erik Hansen aged 18 - brother
Anthon Hansen aged 14 - brother
Olaves Hansen aged 10 - brother
I THINK I might have found him too! spelled Niels but no farm name listed
1869 April 23 Niels Hansen unmarried, aged 27, born Eger destined to
Chicago. This one is travelling with a Jakob Hansen unmarried, aged 29,
born Sandsvær, destined to Chicago. They departed on the Wilson Line
"feeder ship" ARGO which departed April 23rd at arrived at Hull Monday
April 26.
Inman Line CITY OF LONDON which departed Liverpool April 28th 1869, and
arrived at New York, NY on Saturday May 8th 1869. (I can't help you find
the NY list, but others can advise)
Well, I think I have found enough Nils Hansen for today, as you have work
cut out for you checking those arrivals. Probably #2 will be yours, with
the correct farm name, so if his age is correct then try the May 8th
arrival of the City of London first.
Best of luck!
Sue
