Hi List

I am interested in this excerpt from an earlier message om this
List because it seems to indicate some sort of official register for
merchant seamen. I wasn't aware such a Register existed. Can anyone
tell me anything about it? Is it on line and searchable?
My gfather Archibald COX spent quite a bit of time between
1895 - 1918 globe trotting as an engineer on merchant ships. Seems he
began his career in Southampton but spent much of it in South African,
Australian & New Zealand waters. His life is full of stories and rumour
and I would like to try and ascertain which are correct and which are
'embellishments'. One example is a claim he was 'shipwrecked' in Tahiti
in Dec 1916. I haven't been able to find a record of any ship going down
there at that time.
Suggestions?
