Hi Sheila,
If they were destined to Chicago, there is a good chance they might have
arrived via Quebec. Yes, they could have ferried to Liverpool to embark,
but . . .
Checking the CD-ROM --"TheShipsList Passenger Ship Arrivals Canadian Ports
1865-1899"-- http://theshipslist.com/cdrom/index.htm I find that....
In 1873 there were 49 of the ships arriving at Quebec, which also called at
Irish ports. Do you know where in Ireland? 1873 was a good year for Irish
ports, with the 49 stops, mostly Liverpool-Londonderry-Quebec, but there
were also Liverpool-Belfast-Quebec, and two Glasgow-Dublin-Quebec, and
three Liverpool-Queenstown-[train to Quebec]. There would have been many
more Liverpool-Queenstown, but they would have been east coast, St. John's,
Newfoundland, then Halifax, then on to a US east coast port. 1872 is much
the same story, with 47 surviving passenger lists for Irish stops and with
no Belfast, but with many more Glasgow-Dublin.

The Canadian National Archives Microfilm numbers are
1872 C-4527 and C-4528 (for late Oct. & Nov.)
1873 C-4528
The passenger manifest is on Microfilm at the National Archives of
Canada [NAC], in Ottawa. The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of
arrival. You can borrow this reel on an Inter Library Loan [ILL]. You can find
the details for this procedure at this NAC Genealogy Research URL
http://www.archives.ca/02/020202_e.html
You are also able to ILL from Ottawa, to libraries in the US, and
outside North America. These microfilms contain arrivals from ALL ports, they
are not indexed. The LDS do also have copies of this microfilm, their number
LDS number 0889447 ~ 1872
LDS number 0889448 ~ 1873 ~ port of Quebec
Good luck!
Sue
