Subject: [TSL] Unmarried young women traveling alone...a question
Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2003 20:56:43 -0700

Someone had mentioned that for someone to emigrate from Ireland to NYC was
the more expensive way to go. I believe that my Gr-Grandmother did go from
Ireland directly to NYC (thought I am still in active research).

My question is this, If a single young woman in her late teens, early
twenties did go from Ireland to NY, would she likely have traveled as a
servant with a family, possibly traveled alone to seek her fortune (which I
believe is unlikely), or is there some other way young women came to the USA
to NY.

She would have immigrated here in 1890-1891. She married here in 1895. Just
questions that run through my mind and wanted to see what others have found
to be patterns.
