"Abel Seeman" recently contributed this to the Cumberland list as
part of a general answer about emigration from Carlisle. Copied with
permission.

By one of the Carlisle steam packet companies from Carlisle to
Liverpool and onwards by one of the Liverpool packet companies, sail
or steam, from Liverpool to an appropriate Canadian port, coastal
or riverine.
This would have suited large groups of emigrants as well as
individuals, or a single family, e.g. as reported in the Carlisle
Journal 20 July, 1839 :-" A number of Prussians from Magdeburg, some
time ago purchased a tract of land in Upper Canada, lying between
Montreal and Quebec, to which they are now emigrating. About a
fortnight ago, 130 of the party passed through this city, on their
route. On Thursday last, 218 more of the emigrants arrived here by
the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, and were conveyed in lighters to
Port Carlisle, where they embarked on the CITY OF CARLISLE steamer for
Liverpool". This vessel was a small 181 ton coastal steamer plied by
the Carlisle, Annan & Liverpool Steam Company.

The routing is interesting as the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway only
opened to Newcastle in 1839 although the line opened to Gateshead in
1837 with a ferry to Newcastle. The common transmigration route from
Hull to Liverpool did not open until 1841. However Carlisle was not
very useful as a destination as a steamer (or later another train)
was needed to reach Liverpool so this route never became common.

The Prussian emigrants are also interesting. I don't know of any
settlement in Quebec (which was Lower Canada!) which matches this
description. Also I have checked the Montreal Gazette for 1839 and
NO Germans are listed in the emigration statistics - so where did
these people go after Liverpool?
