Subject: General search information and LaVANCE in NY ca. 1837

I have been unable to locate my ancestor in any passenger index, although I
know he came to New York City from Great Britain between about 1836 and
1839. I have him in NYC by 1839, and he was naturalized at the Marine Court
in 1844. My question is: Are the Passenger and Immigration Lists: New York,
1820-1850 arranged by date on the actual rolls of lists? I am thinking that
I could work backwards through 1839 and earlier, checking lists of any ship
from England. Does this make sense to those of you who are experienced with
passenger hunting?
The subject is Edward M. LaVANCE b. ca. 1810, possibly traveling with his
wife, Lydia.
