Subject: Shipwreck & Death at Sea 1912
Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2005 03:57:57 EST
I am hoping that someone has access to deaths at sea or newspaper archives
that might help me find information about my great uncle. I do not know the
name of his ship.
He was a merchant crewmen lost in the North Sea (or North Atlantic) ca
1912.
His ship caught fire. About to get into a lifeboat, he went back to
retrieve something.
He was never heard from again. His body was never recovered.
Name: Charles (Theodor?) BERGGREEN, reportedly a Master Machinists Mate
Age: About 37 years old.
Born circa 1875 in Bremerhaven or Hamburg, Germany, of Danish heritage.
Son of Charles Theodor BERGGREEN and Maria Elisabeth Wilhelmina (Burmester)
Berggreen.
Resident of Antwerp, Belgium since about 1886.
Married a girl from Antwerp sometime prior to June 1909.
He had a younger brother, Herman Berggreen, who worked for Lompart & Holt
aboard the Euclid and Wordsworth. He had another younger brother, Hugo
Berggreen, worked for Red Star mostly aboard the Lapland. He had a brother-in-law,
Charles Verheyen, who also worked for Red Star, aboard the Pennland.
He could have worked for either line, as both were out of Antwerp, or he
could have worked for some other line altogether.
Dan of Pennsylvania in the United States of America
