Hi Marie,
I suspect it was this French ship -
CHANDERNAGOR, 3,075 gross tons, 341ft x 40.3ft, one funnel, two masts, iron
hull, single screw, speed 11 knots. Built 1882 by William Denny & Bros,
Dumbarton for Cie Nationale de Navigation, Marseilles. Built for the
Marseilles - Far East service, she transferred to the Marseilles - Naples -
New York route from 1887 to 1896. In 1899 she was sold to Caillol et St.
Pierre, France and renamed ALEXANDER III. 1902 sunk in collision with the
British ship ASHMADI in Jeddah Harbour.
I can find no info on her calling at Australia but many ships on the Far
East service did.
regards
Ted
